One Deaf World (ODW) Safe Space & Conduct Policy
By attending any of our events you agree to the following Safe Space & Conduct Policy.
1. Purpose & Core Values
One Deaf World is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and productive environment for all participants, facilitators, and staff. We bring together professionals and learners from diverse backgrounds, languages, and cultures. Every attendee is entitled to participate free from harassment, intimidation, visual/verbal aggression, and personal attacks.
2. Standards of Conduct
All participants, presenters, and staff are expected to uphold the following standards:
Mutual Respect: Treat all individuals with dignity and respect, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, sign language fluency, or identity.
Constructive Collaboration: Group work and discussions must focus on learning outcomes, shared participation, and constructive communication.
Linguistic Inclusivity: Language differences (including fluency levels in International Sign, ASL, or other national sign languages) must never be used to belittle, humiliate, or undermine another participant’s intellect or standing.
3. Prohibited Behavior
The following behaviors constitute a direct violation of our Safe Space Policy and will not be tolerated:
Hostile Outbursts & Aggression: Yelling, aggressive signing, intimidation, or invading personal space.
Harassment & Personal Attacks: Making unsubstantiated public accusations of bigotry, privilege abuse, or incompetence against fellow attendees or facilitators. While genuine concerns regarding safety and equity are taken seriously, weaponizing accusations to silence, bully, or attack others is prohibited.
Linguistic Elitism & Belittling: Using language preference or signing fluency to demean, degrade, or intimidate others.
Disruption: Refusing to allow others to speak or intentionally destabilizing educational sessions.
4. Incident Reporting & Investigation Process
When a conflict or potential violation occurs:
Reporting: Any participant or facilitator impacted by or witnessing inappropriate behavior should report it immediately to an event organizer or staff member.
Fact-Finding & Witness Review: Event organizers will review the situation objectively. This includes conferring privately with all involved parties and independent witnesses to determine facts before taking administrative action.
Resolution: If an accusation is substantiated, appropriate action will be taken against the offender. If an accusation is found to be unsubstantiated and delivered in a hostile manner, it will be treated as targeted bullying and handled accordingly.
5. Policy Enforcement & Removal Rights
Zero Tolerance for Bullying: One Deaf World reserves the right to suspend or immediately remove any individual from the event premises (or virtual platform) whose conduct violates this policy or compromises the safety and well-being of participants or staff.
No Refund Policy: Any participant removed from an event for a Safe Space Policy violation forfeits their registration fee in full. No refunds, partial refunds, or course credits will be issued.
Future Event Ban: One Deaf World reserves the right to deny registration or ban individuals involved in severe or repeated policy violations from participating in future workshops, camps, or events affiliated with the organization.
